How to buy a puppy

Choosing a puppy is an exciting time – and can bring joy to a home. But getting a dog requires thought and planning, to ensure you get off to the right start. Costs, domestic space and the impact on your time all need to be considered.

What will a dog cost?

According to dog welfare group the Kennel Club a dog costs about £25 a week when average purchase cost and ongoing expenses, such as food and veterinary fees, are totted up.

However, if your dog falls ill, or has an accident, you’ll be left facing bills for treatment by a vet.

Pet insurance has become more popular in recent years, with about 45% of dogs and cats now covered in the UK. Such protection gives you peace of mind that if your pet is struck down it will receive the care it needs. Get a pet insurance quote from Asda.

Should I get a dog?

It’s best to try to match the characteristics and personalities of particular breeds with your personal circumstances. But regardless of which breed you plump for be prepared to devote enough care and attention to see your new pet happily through an average lifespan of 12 years.

The size of your home is important. Large and energetic dogs, such as Great Danes, or border collies, would not suit a small home such as a modest flat. Time is another important factor – dogs need walking every day. Then you need to consider time for training and grooming.

If your house is empty for most of the day, this could cause stress for a dog, especially puppies. Dogs are naturally pack animals, so are not suited to being left alone for long periods.

A good choice for a dog owner with limited space, who wants to keep the time spent cleaning and exercising their pet to a minimum, might be a toy breed such as a smooth-coated chihuahua, English toy terrier, miniature pinscher or a pug.

Dogs that are popular as family pets, because of their good-tempered nature, include Retrievers and Labradors. They are adaptable and loyal companions, with a strong will to please and kind nature, with few traces of aggression. However, it is important to note that they are active dogs and require plenty of exercise and attention.

Where to buy a dog?

The Kennel Club recommends buyers go to recognised dog breeders to purchase a pedigree puppy. This gives the best chance of getting a dog that will enjoy a happy and healthy life. Although within one breed each dog will have its own personality, they will have common characteristics. Do some research and find out which breed’s general demeanour suits you.

Adopting a dog from a rescue shelter is another option. However, be aware that a rescue dog may need lots of time for retraining, or need extra attention due to past abuse. Those with a busy lifestyle, or very young children, should think twice about getting a rescue dog.

A puppy will need immunisation against disease. Check with a breeder what has been administered and what further action you need to take. Microchipping is recommended, as it provides a permanent, inexpensive form of identification for your dog that cannot be lost, altered, or intentionally removed.

Then you can concentrate on the exciting things, like buying a lead, toys and basket or cage.
