The bull elk's bugle is one of the most distinct sounds you will ever hear in the wild. It as been compared to everything from a woman shriek to blood curdling squeal of a dropping gauntlet. To the avid elk hunter the combination of this sound and the mewing of the cows is a beautiful symphony.
Not since the 1800's has the elk roamed freely in the commonwealth, but thanks
to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife with the support of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation this large majestic animal now wanders the reclaimed strip mines of the eastern part of our state. The Kentucky Elk Restoration Project is regarded as one of the most successful wildlife reintroduction efforts even conducted. With numbers close to 5800 Kentucky now possesses the largest elk herd east of the Mississippi river.
The low cost to enter to have your name drawn makes it worth your while, but the KDFWR issued 200 tags to hunt elk this past year with a limited number being bull tags.
