The perception that the weather here is terrible has been reinforced by a tourism survey which showed just 6% of people "totally disagreed" with the notion that Britain is "always wet and foggy".
VisitBritain, the British tourism authority, questioned 1,000 people in 36 countries around the world: 14% of them "totally agreed" with the wet-and-foggy opinion, 35% "agreed" and 26% claimed indifference.
The phrase, "There's no such thing as bad weather, it's just wrong clothing", springs to mind, as people in the UK tend to be more prepared when holidaying at home, making sure they have suitable insect repellent and vehicle breakdown cover.
On being asked what they though about the statement: "I would not want to visit Britain because of the weather there", only 4% of respondents said they totally agreed and 36% said they totally disagreed.
Sandie Dawe, VisitBritain chief executive, said: "This survey shows that Britain's weather is not as bad as folklore would have us believe. Our research also tells us that visitors from overseas come here to experience our world-class heritage and culture, be this Tate Liverpool, Edinburgh Castle, the British Museum or Stonehenge.
"Visitors do not come with a belief that should a few drops of rain fall then their trip will be ruined."
