Edinburgh voted top UK city break

Renowned for its annual festival, rugged setting and vast collection of medieval and Georgian architecture, Edinburgh has been named as the best city for UK residents looking for a staycation.

Perhaps inspired by the Camerons' trip to Cornwall, with the effects of the credit crunch and global downturn still in people's minds and the euro expensive for Britons, people are increasingly looking to these shores for their breaks.

Readers of Conde Nast Traveller magazine voted for the Scottish capital as their favourite venue for a break, lifting it from second spot last year.

Architecture, culture and "user-friendliness" were particularly noted by voters, although the city did score high across the board.

Last year's number one - London - fell to third place, behind Oxford.

If you are thinking of driving from anywhere in England or Wales to Edinburgh, you're advised to make sure you have breakdown cover, as you could otherwise be left stranded at the roadside if you develop problems under the bonnet.

Edinburgh Council leader Jenny Dawe said: "This result is great news for the city and confirms what we all know: Edinburgh is a great place in which to visit, invest, live, work and study.

"The city truly has the best of everything - historic buildings and great atmosphere, a vibrant leisure and retail offering, abundant green space, outstanding schools and universities - the list goes on.

"Little wonder, then, that people continue to think of Edinburgh as a must-visit location."
