Preparation 'key' to peaceful journey

Preparation is the key to a harmonious car journey, according to new research.

Some 53% of respondents to a survey by Castrol said car travel was the main cause of unnecessary arguments.

Getting lost (48%) and backseat driving (21%) were most likely to spark an argument, with the average tiff lasting for 2.6 hours, the survey found.

Not only could this discord ruin the holiday but, more importantly, it could also lead to a loss of concentration for the driver.

Castrol, who carried out the survey, warned drivers to carry out a few simple checks before setting out on their journey instead of just relying on their breakdown cover.

Quentin Willson, motoring expert, comments: "If over half of Brits are arguing over directions for hours, imagine how awful it could be if your car broke down, or your tyre burst. To be prepared for car calamity, there are simple, very quick tasks that anyone can do to take car of their car before a journey."
