Ferrari cars recalled after fire claims

Top-of-the-range car maker Ferrari may have prevented hundreds of car insurance claims being made after it recalled all its 458 Italia models following reports of unexplained fires breaking out.

The Italian manufacturer said it will carry out work to modify all 1,200 of the luxury cars, which are priced at a cool £170,000 each, and are sure to cost a lot for car insurance cover.

Engineers from the company have already visited California, Paris, Switzerland, China, and another unnamed location to investigate reports of "thermal incidents", a spokesman said.

It is believed the problem is linked with an adhesive used in the vehicle's wheel-arch assemblies, which can sometimes overheat, smoke, and catch fire.

Isolated examples have seen the fire deform a liner protecting the engine so that it moves closer to the exhaust and catches fire itself.

Those owners whose cars were destroyed because of the problem will receive a replacement model, Ferrari said.

All other buyers will have their vehicles modified.
