'Novice' model tops motorbike sales

Motorcycles aimed at novice bikers have raced to the top of the 2010 sales charts, bucking the trend of falling sales in the sector.

Yamaha's YBR125 has proved the year's best seller, with a large number of learners and newly qualified riders shelling out on the model - and hopefully complementing their new purchase with adequate breakdown cover.

The Japanese firm also produced the second most popular bike, the sporty YZF-R125, and has the top selling scooter, the XC125.

But German manufacturer BMW showed its muscle with a dominant showing in sales of higher engine bikes.

In the 651cc-1000cc class, BMW's new S1000RR was top of the tree, and for bikes over 1,000cc, its adventure-sports R1200GS was the bike of choice.

However, bike sales as a whole have fallen 16% in 2010 compared with the same period last year, with the traditionally resilient supersports sector suffering the biggest yearly fall, plunging 28%.
