Whisky power to fuel cars of the future

A new biofuel formulated from the by-products generated in whisky production could be powering the cars of the future, scientists have said.

Researchers from Edinburgh Napier University's Biofuel Research Centre have hit upon a means of transforming the two main by-products of whisky production into a viable, clean burning fuel that can be poured straight into a car's fuel tank without the need for expensive alterations.

While the combination of alcohol and motoring is usually a one-way ticket to the local police station, the new biofuel could become a low-carbon pocket pleaser that cuts the cost of filling up at the pump, leaving more money for the other associated costs of vehicle ownership such as road tax and car insurance.

The innovative new fuel uses the spent liquid from copper stills and used grains to create butanol, which can then be used as fuel.

Such is the effectiveness of the fuel that the university has filed a patent for the product and set up its own company dedicated to introducing it to petrol stations across the UK.
