Big Ben may save on electricity with LED

Big Ben should do its bit for the environment by embracing gas and electricity saving measures such as LED lighting, an MP has claimed.

Tory Philip Hollobone suggested that the iconic clock be illuminated by the technology, pointing out that it used only a fraction of the electricity of normal bulbs.

Mr Hollbone said: "Given that it uses just 5% of the electricity of normal bulbs, hardly ever needs replacing and contains no mercury so then can be recycled, have the authorities given any consideration to lighting Big Ben with LED technology?"

Labour's Sir Stuart Bell replied: "That is a very intriguing question so early in the parliamentary session and one which the commission would be happy to look into."

Measures to save gas and electricity have already been installed across the parliamentary estate, with many rooms, corridors, stairwells and waiting areas now being illuminated by LED lighting.
