More than a million EDF Energy customers face a price hike for their energy bills this autumn.
The gas and electricity supplier said 37% of its customers would be affected by the 2.6% rise in electricity from October 1, which will add an extra £10.82 to the average household bill.
About 1.2 million people on standard tariffs in 11 of EDF's 14 UK regions will have to pay up, as will customers on Economy 7 tariffs in the other areas, but those on fixed-price electricity contracts or gas-only deals will avoid the increase.
Affected areas include Eastern, East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West, North Wales, South Wales, North Scotland, South Scotland, Southern and Yorkshire, and Economy 7 customers in London, South East and South West regions.
According to a company announcement, EDF is introducing the extra charge to compensate for higher distribution and transmission costs across the country, claiming transmission has increased 16% since the last bill restructure in March 2008.
However, affected households looking for cheap gas and electricity can sign up for the company's energy discount plan, which offers a 2.5% discount on gas and electricity if customers keep their contracts until the end of September 2011.
