People are to be given a chance to witness the effects of their gas and electricity consumption through the launch of an online "calculator" designed to show the true costs of energy overuse.
The 2050 pathways calculator asks visitors to input information about their energy habits, showing how they might impact on the overall supply as the country moves towards a legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% over the next 40 years.
As well as looking at gas and electricity, the tool also takes transport and the emission of greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide into account.
It also supplies users with information on what they can do to reduce their gas and electricity bills, such as using environmentally-friendly forms of transport, installing proper insulation and turning down thermostats.
The Department of Energy and Climate change said the project was one of a number of policies designed to reduce the UK's dependence on non-renewable forms of energy. It added that the cost of these new policies would add just £13 to the average household energy bill during the next 10 years.
