'Millions could benefit' from energy saving plans

Up to 14 million homes could benefit from insulation that will save them money on their bills under the Government's new "green deal", said Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne.

The new proposals aim to cut carbon from homes and reduce gas and electricity bills, with Mr Huhne describing energy saving as the "Cinderella of the energy ball".

UK households "may as well be burning £50 notes outside our front doors" because of the amount of energy being wasted, Mr Huhne told delegates at the Economist UK Energy Summit.

The Green Deal scheme will see energy companies and high street stores pay in advance for work to insulate homes and improve energy efficiency, under a "radical overhaul of our existing homes to save energy, carbon and costs" planned by the Government.

Householders will then pay back the money on their bills from savings made by having more efficient homes that take less energy to heat.

Mr Huhne will say that up to 14 million homes in the UK could benefit from better insulation, while boosting the market for energy saving measures will also help drive economic recovery.
