Customers should use price comparison websites to take advantage of some of the cheapest gas and electricity prices in Europe, Chris Huhne has said.
The energy secretary rejected suggestions that household bills would soar due to the coalition's package of green measures and insisted gas and electricity prices would be reduced in the long term, as Britain moved to renewable sources and reduced its reliance on oil and gas from the Middle East.
In a direct plea for people to use price comparison websites to save money, Mr Huhne said: "Switching is a really effective means of the consumer taking some power."
He was speaking just days after British Gas raised gas and electricity prices by an average of 18% and 16% respectively from August 18, hiking the average dual fuel bill by £190 a year to £1,219.
Last month, Scottish Power raised its prices last month and the remaining 'big six' suppliers are expected to follow suit.
