Agency gives flood defence warning

Local communities in future must contribute more to flood defence plans than just ensuring they have adequate home insurance in place, a Government body has warned.

The Environment Agency says the increasing pace of climate change means communities, businesses and landowners must make a financial contribution to flood defence schemes, despite the body getting record Government funding of £629 million in the last financial year.

Chief executive Dr Paul Leinster said some communities have already devised ways to contribute to defence schemes, which can cut the risk of flooding and home insurance claims in the event of heavy rain fall.

Asda has already contributed £2 million to a flood defence scheme in Hereford as part of its planning conditions, while a community trust formed in Bawdsey, Suffolk, managed to raise £2.2 million to construct a similar project.

Dr Leinster said: "We must now also look at alternative funding streams, including increased contributions from those who will benefit from future defence schemes."
