Poll reveals the average Briton

The life of the average Briton - an accident-prone, home-loving early riser with two car insurance policies and a propensity to live in a house called The Cottage - has been laid bare by two new surveys.

Research showed that Mr "middle of the road" typically had the surname Smith, lived on the High Street and owned two cars - one of which was almost always a Ford Fiesta.

A strict non-smoker with habits including a tendency to go to bed around 11pm every night, it is likely that Mr Average pays significantly less on his life insurance policy than many other people.

If the number of claims made are anything to go by, then robust home insurance cover is a must for the hypothetical individual, with the average sum coming in at just over £350 per case, with the average amount of personal possessions insured standing at £28,000.

Market researchers OnePoll spoke to 2000 people for the survey last month.
