Regular wedding gifts 'not popular'

Couples planning to tie the knot within the next few years are increasingly asking for vouchers and cash rather than traditional wedding gifts, research has claimed.

A poll by the National Wedding Show found that 69% of people surveyed said they were planning to ask for money and gift vouchers, with the proceeds hopefully going towards a home insurance policy robust enough to cover the household items bought with donations.

With an uncertain economic outlook, fears over job security and increases in the price of home insurance and car insurance, not to mention gas and electricity, newlyweds have clearly been seduced by the idea of improved financial control.

Quick-witted companies have been quick to capitalise on the pattern, with many now offering vouchers as a gift option.

Hamish Kaumaya, of Luxuryholidaysdirect.com, said: "We realise that many of our customers are not the 'toaster and towels gift' kind of people so we have set up an easy to use online service where guests can contribute to the cost of the wedding package and/or honeymoon."
