Residents and business owners who suffered damage during the riots will be able to claim compensation under the Riot Damages Act, the Prime Minister has said.
David Cameron pledged that the Government will ensure police have sufficient funds to meet legitimate claims and added that whereas claims should usually be received within 14 days, this deadline will be extended to 42 days.
The bill for the damage is expected to cost the insurance industry more than £200 million as people make claims on their home insurance and business cover, according to the Association of British Insurers.
Mr Cameron also announced measures to help businesses recover, including a £20 million "high street support scheme", tax breaks and deferred payments. Families who have lost their homes will have the immediate costs of emergency accommodation paid by the Government.
An initiative providing emergency support to councils, known as the Bellwin Scheme, will be put into action and £10 million will be put towards helping town halls make areas "safe, clean and clear again".
