Thefts from tents at Glastonbury rise

Revellers intending to mark Glastonbury Festival's 40th outing may want to check how much their home insurance covers them while camping, after police warned of a rise in thefts from tents this year.

More than 100,000 people are camping at the festival on the 900-acre farm in Pilton, Somerset, and along with the glorious sunshine, there has been an increase in crime.

A total of 88 thefts from tents were recorded by the end of Thursday, according to Avon and Somerset Police, almost double last year's figure of 47. Overall, 116 crimes have been recorded so far this year compared with 100 at the same stage last year.

Sergeant Carolyn Crocker said: "Overall the statistics show that crime remains low and the festival remains a largely safe environment. However it's disappointing that a small minority feel the need to engage in criminal activity and spoil the event for others.

"We're continuing to work closely with security and stewards to educate festival-goers to the dangers of leaving valuables unattended in tents. At the moment it appears that iPhones and cash are the main targets for thieves and this is so easily preventable."
