Nine out of 10 'get stressed-out by money'

Money makes the world go round, and a survey has proved our obsession with wealth by suggesting nine out of 10 people get stressed-out by their finances.

A total of 87% of adults said they have been affected by money worries in the past and 10% can never let go of financial insecurities. Significantly, a quarter of people suffer from sleepless nights and are frequently left pondering how to balance their earnings and outgoings.

Despite the UK seeing the signs of a tentative economic recovery after escaping from recession, nearly two-thirds of people said their stress levels have increased in the past 12 months, according to research by OnePoll.

The rising cost of living, reflected in inflation running at 3.4% and soaring petrol prices, is the main source of people's money worries, while mortgage repayments, debts, bills and job losses were also areas of concern.

The problems could be seriously exacerbated by being made redundant, and those fearful of the losing their jobs and wanting to protect their financial health could use income protection cover to put their minds at rest.

Four out of 10 people claim they suffer from anxiety because of the state of their finances, while 25% said they had gained weight, 23% said they had suffered depression, 22% were unable to concentrate and 21% reported problems sleeping.

The research found that even people who were comfortably off were vulnerable to feeling stressed about their finances, with middle managers the most likely to be stressed, followed by people in supervisory roles and skilled manual workers.
