UK living standards 'deteriorating'

The living standards of ordinary people in the UK are worsening, a report has said.

Workers are still in the grip of recession and many feel insecure about their jobs, according to a study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Around two in five of the 2,000 workers questioned said they believe they will lose their job because of cuts, and two-thirds said that if they were made redundant, finding another job would be difficult. This may be good time to look into life insurance, as workers seek extra financial security.

Not even a third of public sector workers could say they were satisfied with their job, and around a quarter of them believe they will soon be unemployed. The study showed that attitudes by staff in the public sector towards management has also worsened, in light of the recent announcement of massive public services cuts by the Government.

Those who work for private companies were a little more positive about their job security, according to the institute. Around one in five believed they will soon lose their job.

Back in the public sector, the survey showed that half of all workers had their wages frozen this year and two in every five said bosses were planning redundancies.
