Cats Protection plea to pet lovers

A downturn in the number of people able to afford the costs of rehoming a pet has been noticed by a leading cat adoption charity, whose centres are bursting at the seams.

Cats Protection's Birmingham Centre has pens to accommodate 105 felines but a waiting list of over 500.

The tough economic climate has taken its toll on cat owners, with many unable to keep up with the costs of food, treats and pet insurance, to name but a few expenditures.

The UK's foremost cat welfare charity is now issuing a plea to pet lovers who think they can spare the cash and offer a loving home to the cats, in a bid to boost its adoption efforts.

To entice prospective owners, Cats Protection is even offering four weeks' free pet insurance cover, along with the guarantee that all of its cats will have been microchipped, examined by a vet and neutered on collection.

"Recently we took in a box of nine kittens which had been dumped at the side of the road and another kitten left in a plastic basket in the pouring rain," said Alison Dickinson, deputy manager of Cats Protection's Birmingham branch.

A 16% drop in the number of cat adoptions was noted this August compared to same time last year, while a worrying and disproportionate rise of 14% in incoming felines was also recorded.
