Dog owners in Gloucestershire have been urged to check their pet's vaccination history after a highly contagious - and often deadly - disease was found in two local puppies.
The Coppins Veterinary Practice in Gloucestershire said pet owners should remain vigilant for the signs of parvovirus, sometimes referred to simply as 'parvo', which include lethargy, vomiting, fever and diarrhoea.
The practice said the cost of keeping up to speed with vaccinations was minor in comparison to the cost of vets' bills if owners have failed to take out pet insurance, and urged local pet owners to consult with their vet while keeping their dogs indoors and out of contact with other dogs where possible.
Alarm bells rang last week when a nine-month-old unvaccinated puppy displaying symptoms of parvovirus was brought into the surgery where it is now recovering.
However, two five-week-old Lurcher puppies have since been put down on welfare grounds just days before having their vaccinations after also showing symptoms of the disease.
The practice has also confirmed a third case of the disease, sparking fresh calls for dog owners with or without pet insurance to consult with their vet if they suspect their dog has developed symptoms.
