The Saturdays back dog owner responsibility campaign

Girl band The Saturdays has teamed up with charity Dogs Trust to support a campaign aimed at putting an end to people treating their pets like fashion accessories.

The initiative aims to show prospective animal owners that a pet is for life and not just a fashion statement. Animals require a lot of time and attention to take care of properly and owners have the responsibility of organising pet insurance and trips to the vet.

The A Dog Is Not A Toy campaign comes after the number of people abandoning their pets was shown to be on the rise, with a 28% increase in the number of dogs being handed into the charity's rehoming centres in the last five years.

The group, whose hits include Ego and Issues, has been joined by Nintendo in backing the campaign.

Band member Mollie King said: "Dogs aren't accessories, they're living animals. We see [our dogs] as members of our families. But we take it very seriously, and you have to realise that when you have a dog it's a huge responsibility. But with that responsibility comes a best friend forever."
