It is safe to assume that one Hampshire dog owner will never let their pet insurance policy lapse after their beloved four-year-old cocker spaniel spent a night at a vet's after it became stuck down a fox hole for four days.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted after Ivy was found trapped in a hole in woods in Burghclere by a member of the public.
With guidance from the RSPCA, animal rescue specialist Buster Brown used a mirror and a torch to locate the animal.
He then called for the assistance of the Urban Search and Rescue team, which used its flexible search camera and listening devices, used recently to search for people in the recent earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, to locate Ivy.
A Hampshire fire service spokesman said: "After about two hours the crews were able to expose Ivy's face.
"Watch manager Brown then gave her some water and slowly cut away at the soil to release her.
"She was kept in overnight [at a local vet] on a drip, having been trapped for four days she was dehydrated and needed fluid replacement. She is now making a full recovery at home."
While this story has a happy ending, it does serve as a reminder of the importance of having a valid dog insurance policy to cover expensive vet bills should your four-legged friend ever need treatment.
