In the space of one year, around 60,000 people from the UK reported their passport either lost or stolen while abroad, the Identity and Passport Service has said.
More and more organised criminals regard passports as valuable, according to the service, underscoring the benefit of having travel insurance.
Overall, around 279,000 passports were reported lost or stolen both in the UK and abroad between April 2009 and March 2010.
The service's Sarah Rapson said: "It is vital that people take care of their passports, both at home and abroad. Passports are increasingly attractive documents to organised criminals. Hijacking someone else's identity can help facilitate a wide range of very serious crimes."
