5 ways to save money travelling

Ways-save-money

You’ve scrimped and saved all year for your winter holiday and it’s almost here.  But why blow the budget just because you are on holiday?  Savvy savers can make the most out of their money whilst overseas and here’s how...

Choose the right airline

If you’re travelling last minute or looking to book ahead, choose an airline that will give you the most value for money. With all the additional fees and charges associated with low cost airlines, budget airlines are not always the cheapest option, particularly if you manage to book in advance with certain airlines.

Exchange rates

When it comes down to it, exchange rates might eat away at your holiday spending money.  Whilst this is difficult to avoid you can reduce what you pay in foreign currency commission and interest rates by purchasing travel money before you go – always avoid buying currency at the airport because it’s the most expensive.Debit and credit card issuers tend to whack on hefty interest rates and exchange rates so you might want to avoid using them too.

Buy local supermarket food

When in Rome do as the Romans do. Check out your local supermarket to grab some cheap food as eating out for every meal can soon add up. Shopping at a supermarket while away, even occasionally, should mean that you will be able to avoid jacked up tourist prices too.

Don’t spend loads of money on guide books

The internet is your best friend when abroad and you can easily pop into a local internet café to find what you’re after or download some relevant apps to your Smartphone before you go (check roaming charges though to avoid unnecessary costs). Another alternative is to get friendly with the locals and discover things that are not in the guide book.

Travel insurance

It may be advisable to invest in some decent travel insurance. Depending on the type of holiday you are going on and what you plan to do, it could save you in the long run. For example, the latest research from independent financial research company Defaqto found that one in ten policies don’t cover winter sports activities.
