Nearly half of all Brits admit to checking their work emails when on holiday, new research claims.
According to travel website TripAdvisor, 48 per cent of all British workers check their emails when they are away, up 10 per cent on last year. The survey, carried out in September 2011 among more than 1,000 UK respondents paints an interesting picture of the modern British attitude to holidays and work.
Of those who admit to checking up on their emails while they are on holiday, 57 per cent admitted to doing so to help reduce their workload on returning to work, while 39 per cent said that it helps them relax more if they know what is going on back at work.
An additional 19 per cent admitted that they find it difficult to switch off from work while on holiday, but 23 per cent of respondents said that they loved their job and wanted to stay in touch while they were away.
"These results expose some challenging modern developments, with Brits finding it increasingly difficult to switch off from work and unwind on holiday," said Emma Shaw, TripAdvisor spokesperson.
"While mobile technology has made our lives easier in so many ways, it's added an additional layer of expectation to be on call even when on holiday."
Germans Check Email Most on Holiday
On the plus side, Brits take and make far fewer work related calls when on holiday - just 43 per cent admit to making calls, well below the European average of 67 per cent.
And while the growing trend appears to be for British workers to check in with the office via email, we still have a far way to go to catch up with the hard working Germans: 61 per cent of Germans admit to checking their emails while on holiday, compared to 48 per cent in the UK.
