The UK has been swept by a blanket of fog in recent days, leaving drivers to battle the elements and delays at airports causing considerable travel disruption.
A number of UK airports have experienced disruption this week. These include:
Heathrow
At least 60 flights were cancelled after London Heathrow Airport was shrouded in heavy fog on Sunday and Monday. With an average of 1,400 flights a day a total of 120 departures and 104 and arrivals have been cancelled at the UK’s busiest airport since Sunday.
A spokesman for Heathrow said, “The fog has started to clear and there are now no restrictions on flying. There are currently no delays to flights but we advise passengers to check with their airlines before travelling."
London City
London City Airport was also a victim of the fog as 13 arrivals and 18 departures were cancelled on Monday. City Airport is reported to be back on schedule today.
Gatwick
Gatwick tweeted a few hours ago that they are “operating as normal” following the cancellation of two arrivals. The airport is now accepting diverted flights from other airports.
Leeds Bradford Airport
One scheduled flight was cancelled on Monday from Leeds Bradford Airport.
Stansted
Stansted Airport tweeted on Monday “Despite the fog we're operating as normal with only a few minor delays. Allow plenty of time for your journey to the airport.”
Manchester Airport
No real problems there as such, the airport tweeted on Monday, “To those asking: tiny bit misty, but no issues due to fog here.”
It would be advisable to check your travel insurance policy to see if you are covered for weather delays.
Fog on the Road
The fog nightmare has affected the roads, too, as visibility levels worsened yesterday. Drivers up and down the country were crawling along motorways as the fog caused visibility to fall.
Whilst the next few days are set to be mild and cloudy throughout most of the country, the Met Office has now issued warnings that more severe weather is on the way.
A warning for dense fog has been issued for Yorkshire and Humberside, the East and West Midlands, the East of England and the South East.
Heavy gales could also be on their way to the North West in the next few days, too - and frost and fog is expected to hit again within the next 2 weeks as well as snow in Scotland!
