Despite economic difficulties, many families still consider holidays to be a priority – looking for ways to cut costs at the same time.
Summer 2011 saw an increased number of families (one in four) take holidays with extended family, helping to distribute costs and give children the best possible experiences. With that in mind, what are the best travel destinations for kids and why are they such great options?
1: Florida
Attracting 82.3 million tourists from across the world in 2010, Florida is a great holiday destination – especially for kids. The area has been considered a firm favourite with Brits for a number of years, with numerous activities catering to the tastes of both adults and children.
Reasons why kids will love it: Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Studios, The Kennedy Space Centre and glorious beaches.
2: English south coast
Whilst London is expected to be the top UK holiday destination this year (thanks to the Olympics), previous years have seen the English southern coast emerge as a firm favourite for British holidaymakers – especially for those with young children. Cornwall was named the ‘Best UK Holiday County or Region’ in the British Travel Awards for the third consecutive year in 2011.
Reasons why kids will love it: coal mines, beaches, Pendennis Castle, Treasure Park, National Seal Sanctuary and Blue Reef Aquarium.
3: Spain
The most popular destination for British holidaymakers since 1994, Spain is the perfect destination for kids and adults alike. In 2010, five separate Spanish areas featured in the top ten holiday destinations for the year, with popular resorts such as Malaga, Tenerife and Palma making the list.
Reasons why kids will love it: kids clubs, water parks, Museo del Prado and beaches.
4: Italy
Food, scenery and a warm climate all make Italy the perfect destination for holidaying families. Italy frequently features as one of the top destinations for Brits, with Rome being named the fifth best destination in 2010.
Reasons why kids will love it: beaches, weather, food, the Coloseum and Pantheon.
5: Scotland
Just as the southern parts of the UK attract visitors, so do the northern parts. Scotland is a great destination for kids, offering a range of great activities and sights.
Reasons why kids will love it: Loch Ness monster, Edinburgh Castle, landscapes and Kelivngrove Art Gallery.
