UK braced for more travel chaos

Threatened strike action at some of the UK's biggest airports could destroy the holiday plans of thousands of British tourists this summer, not to mention have them reaching for their travel insurance documents.

Many might already have made the necessary preparations and ordered their travel money, but tourists booked on flights in the next few weeks face uncertainty after staff at BAA's six airports, including Heathrow, voted to take industrial action in a row over pay.

While only half of the total number eligible to vote did so, 74.1% of members who went to the polls were in favour of a strike.

Unite said no final decision would be taken until after a Acas-organised meeting between BAA and the workers.

A strike could be called as early as August 23 - not long before the bank holiday weekend.

Affected airports would include Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
