Biker completes epic African odyssey

A British biker has endured meagre rations and being robbed of his travel money to complete an epic 30,000-mile circumnavigation of Africa, raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process.

Spencer Conway, from Kent, finished the nine-month adventure on a Yamaha XT660Z Tenere - losing 12kgs of body weight during the journey.

He would have put his travel insurance to good use as he said he had been shot at in Kenya, robbed of his travel money in Angola and forced off the road by a logging truck in Ghana.

Crossing four deserts and facing 45 degree heat, tropical thunderstorms and sandstorms, Spencer is looking forward to the quiet life again with his family.

Making his journey even more difficult, he survived only on food gathered from the roadside - including snakes and Africa's staple dish of mealie pap and gravy.

And Mr Conway's motorcycle also survived relatively unscathed - suffering only punctures, a snapped chain, broken lights and a replacement clutch.

As an ambassador for Save the Children, Mr Conway raised nearly £28,000 for medical supplies and orphanages in Suda, Angola and Burkina Faso.
