Britons spend more on overseas accommodation

Finding a cheap travel insurance deal is now more important than ever after the rising cost of overseas hotel accommodation for UK travellers was revealed.

Britons paid an average of £95 a night staying in hotels abroad last year - the second highest amount in the European Union, figures from the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index showed. The fee is £12 more expensive than the average amount paid to stay in a hotel for a night back in the UK.

British travellers have been hit hard in the pocket by fluctuating exchange rates as the pound fell against the US dollar and the euro during the busy holiday months of June and July.

In Europe, only the Portuguese spent more than UK travellers on foreign hotel accommodation, coughing up £99 a night. Meanwhile, the Irish spent £94, the Italians and Danes both £91, the Spanish £90, the French and Dutch both £87 and the Germans spent £86.

UK travellers were the eighth highest spenders on foreign hotels overall in the annual Hotels.com survey with the Americans top (£104), just £1 more than the Russians (£103). At the other end of the scale, South Africans were the savviest when outside their borders, parting with just £56 a night, according to the report.
