Cameron dismisses claims euro will not survive

David Cameron has dismissed claims that the euro will not survive amid economic problems for a number of countries using the currency.

The Prime Minister said member states "will not let" the euro fail, saying they have too much invested in the currency.

His words will provide reassurance for holidaymakers planning a trip to one of the nations using the euro who have been looking to buy their travel money.

Mr Cameron's backing for the currency comes after former foreign secretary Jack Straw insisted it could not survive, suggesting a quick demise for the currency would be preferable to a "slow death".

The differences of opinion were expressed as EU finance ministers refused to hand a second bailout package of 12 billion euro to Greece, one of the countries that has needed financial support.

The finance ministers want Athens to impose further austerity measures, including tax increases and massive spending cuts, before agreeing to the aid - moves that would be highly unpopular in Greece where thousands have already taken to the streets in protest.
