Cheers! Tourist blows £70,000 on wine

A need for travel money and concerns about the price of travel insurance are unlikely to have been on the mind of a customer who spent £70,000 on eight bottles of wine during a trip through duty free at Dubai International Airport.

The wine enthusiast's purchases, made late last month at the Le Clos fine wine and luxury spirits boutique in the airport's Terminal 3, included bottles of 1947 and 1961 Château Pétrus, as well as a magnum of the 1959 vintage.

The shop claims the spree amounts to double the value of the previous world record, as well as being evidence that the demand for high-end wines is on the rise again.

Andrew Day, chief executive officer of Maritime and Mercantile International, owner of Le Clos, said: "We've seen a noticeable increase in customers purchasing high-value items for gifting, but also for personal consumption or to diversify their investment portfolios."

It is unknown if the customer used credit cards, debit cards or travel money to pay for the wine, although a travel insurance policy robust enough to cover the extravagant purchase is likely to have been incredibly expensive.
