Fans warned over travel money scam

England supporters in South Africa have been warned to avoid fake 200 rand notes during their visit for the World Cup.

Fans were warned by South African authorities to beware of people on the black market offering the "best deal" on currency exchanges for their travel money.

The value of a genuine 200 rand note is around £18.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure said: "International visitors attending the 2010 Fifa World Cup could fall prey to those wishing to take this opportunity to offer 'more favourable' exchange rates via the black market or through an informal system.

"Tourists and soccer fans are advised to exchange their currency through legitimate financial institutions only.

"The security forces are on top of this situation and adhering to our calls to heed this warning will help us a great deal in our efforts to prevent people from becoming victims of this scam."
