A survey has revealed that almost all holidaymakers go considerably over their planned spending levels while away.
Up to 94% of tourists exceed their travel money budget by £500 or more, according to a poll by travel firm TravelSpec.com.
For many, this results in a doubling of the money they originally planned to spend, with 72% of those questioned planning a holiday budget of up to £500.
Based on responses from 6,000 people, the survey also revealed that 78% confessed to spending recklessly before they fly - splashing out up to 10% of their budget in tax-free stores on alcohol, cigarettes, beauty products and other luxuries.
Men are often more extravagant than women, with 74% of male travellers spending up to £50 of their travel money on tax-free products. Women are slightly more frugal, with just 40% admitting to spending £50 or more.
TravelSpec.com's managing director Rafi Neumann said: "With more people choosing to stay at home this summer, those who have booked holidays abroad have done so with a strict budget in place.
"However, once travellers adopt the 'holiday' state of mind they are more easily persuaded to part with their cash, especially when there are discounts available."
