Travellers urged to act smart over phone costs abroad

New research provides a warning to travellers over the cost of using tablet computers and smartphones overseas.

While holidaymakers are wise enough to seek out cheap travel insurance before heading abroad in order to keep costs down, they may have a shock waiting for them when they return home if they fail to research the cost of using devices such as iPads while travelling overseas.

A new study by Which? found it can cost as much as 1,000 times more to use such devices abroad than it does in the UK.

While data use such as checking emails, watching videos and downloading music on a tablet can cost as little as £7.50 a month in the UK for a gigabyte of data, it can cost several thousand pounds while travelling abroad, the consumer champion found.

Which? also found that using a mobile phone for calls while overseas can be up to 10 times more expensive than in the UK, warning consumers that when using handsets abroad they must pay to receive calls as well as to make them.
