Thousands of van and minibus drivers will face extra charges on London's roads from next year, it has been revealed.
Regulations are being tightened in the capital's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) to include a daily charge of up to £200 for drivers of older motor caravans, light 4x4 pick-ups and similar vehicles.
The rules also affect vehicles used to carry large items such as mountain bikes or old furniture, suggesting that more drivers could soon be looking to save money on their van insurance policies to help them cover the extra cost.
It is estimated that the new regulations, which come into force on January 3 next year, will affect up to 72,000 vehicles.
The rules are linked to the Euro IV emissions standards. Any vehicle not meeting the strict criteria will be billed for every day they drive inside the LEZ - which covers most of the area within the M25.
Alex Wright, managing director of Shoreham Vehicle Auctions said: "Transport for London estimates 72,000 vans and minibuses will be affected by the new LEZ regulations."
